Why was this old medieval
church selected for royal renovation? Firstly, its status as having been
founded by the first Christian king Clovis made the Church of Sainte-Genevieve
a symbol of the alliance of the French monarchy and the Church. Louis XV thus
emphasized his ties to his ancestor Clovis. Consequently, this project enabled
the king to strengthen his political position and reinforce national prestige.
Finally, the location of the church was also a consideration.
Before Hugo and Zola,
Voltaire was the prototype of the committed intellectual, in solidarity for our
common future and shared risk. His most read books-Candidate or Optimism,
Philosophical Letter, Treatise on Tolerance, the portable Philosophical
Dictionary- are among the major references of the thought and the spirit of the
Enlightenment.
The inscriptions on his tomb
say: He fought atheists and fanatics, he inspired tolerance, he demanded human
rights against the servitude of feudalism. Poet historian philosopher he
widened the human mind and taught it that it had to be free.
