Reviewing and revising your writing is an important step in
learning to write well in any language. Carefully review each sentence of your
composition above, make revisions, and add depth and content in your second
submission. Revisions will be collected at the beginning of the class period on
the day of the chapter exam. ADD 10 sentences! Write a minimum of 20 sentences

Students read selected chapters of this popular autobiography in different formats (young adult version and graphic novel) to advance reading skills. Student will also watch the film adaptation to improve understanding of spoken Japanese at a natural pace while paying attention to non-verbal communication (e.g. gestures, facial expressions, and use of silence), and other cultural/visual cues. Students increase understanding of some aspects of Japanese culture/society (e.g. family dynamics, local community, teenage life, and current economic status). class activities include mini-lectures, comprehension exercises (such as paraphrasing, summarizing content), scanning and skimming exercises, discussion, and presentations.
By the end of the semester, students will be able to:
- summarize ...(both written and spoken)
- discuss opinions/reflections on...related subjects with classmates
- identify some of the major differences in techniques and styles used in different formats and their effects (including compare and contrast text and visual representation)
- demonstrate cross-cultural understanding ( i.e., being able to describe some of the relationship between cultural products& perspectives and between cultural practices and perspectives, being able to compare and contrast some aspect of their own culture with Japanese with respect to cultural practices, products, and perspective
- Make a well-organized formal presentation (about 12 minutes) about some ..with appropriate vocabulary and grammar constructions. Details will be announced later
- Use at least three o the following meta-cognative skills/strategies
- how to listen and read depending on the purpose (getting a gist, attending information selectively, etc)
- how to use guessing strategies in listening and reading
- how to do paraphrase in speaking and writing
- how to obtain information to continue studying Japanese beyond class situation (such as being able to use dictionaries for unfamiliar words/expressions/grammar constructions, find reliable sources, evaluate and integrate such information
- how to identify your personal "best" learning strategies to strenthen and compensate your skills in Japanese
Homework: students should plan to spend 2-3 hours studying outside of class for each class. Homework needs to be submitted BEFORE each class meeting for full credit. The following are the examples of kind of homework you will be assigned:
