You've got the job

(Can I wear my nose ring to the interview?)

What can you do to make starting a job as easy as possible? The first thing is to know the logistics. When and where do you actually start? To whom should you report? Keep an open mind and be flexible.

your work area

You phone, email, codes, cars, keys

Your boss communication style

Your systems: as you begin to grasp the scope of your new job, you will need to learn existing systems and protocols and then begin to implement your own. Find out how colleagues set up their systems, "I s there a standard procedure on this?" Keep a "procedures" folder: Every time you learn how to o a new task (use the database, fill out a frequently used form or contract) Setting up or improving departmental systems is a great way to use your spare time.

Time for lunch!

People truly are judged by the company they keep. While you should be friendly to everyone, don't rush to befriend anyone. Take time to observe colleagues and supervisors in meetings and one-on-one. Figure out the official and unofficial pecking order. Be discreet in your observations.

Take initiative

Thinking ahead, and anticipating needs: You've got to get the lay of the land and a sense of the personalities around you before you start redesigning. Communicate your ideas and see response. Take initiative in ways that benefit your whole group.

Listen and Learn: "I may not understand the bigger picture yet, but it occurs to me that"

Be humble and helpful

Spread the good word

Create a portfolio: keep an extensive paper trail, get in the weekly habit of reviewing and jotting down your duties and accomplishments.
