Engage College Students: A Fun and Edgy Guide for professors
Every great meal starts with a great recipe as well as the finest ingredients.  The recipe for an effective college instructor calls for the following essential ingredients:
·         Entertainer (to grab your students’ attention):  give praise often, be energetic
·         Coach (to inspire your students to work hard): use real-world examples ; show genuine interest; demand communication;  encourage students to speak loudly
·         Parent (to show you care about your students’ success: ask about students’ hobbies; contact absent students; include students’ names in examples
·         Law professor (to apply the Socratic-lite method) and
·         Classroom Teacher (to give effective lectures): give  Bonus Points for the course evaluation; give an easy daily quiz at the end of each class; use peer grading; review graded exams in class; advise students to pre-read and attend all classes
A road-map to success:
·         Create a concise syllabus and course calendar
·         Be firm but fair
·         Be flexible when needed and revise future syllabi
·         Remind students of semester progress
