英国汉语教学研究会隶属英国汉学学会, 是英国大学汉语教师的非盈利性学术组织,其主要功能是帮助英国高校汉语教师提高汉语作为第二语言的教学水平和科研能力。此外,研究会还为全球范围能的高校汉语教师提供了交流信息的机会和分享经验的平台。近年来,研究会每年选取年会中所发表的优秀论文,集结成书,正式出版大会论文集。通过这种方式,一面呈现英国及其他国家国际汉语教学点研究成果,同时也和学术同行进行学术讨论。本研究会设立执行委员会负责管理日常事务,执行委员由会员大会选举产生。研究会现有会员80多名,分别来自英国30多所开设汉语课程的大学。研究会自1997年在牛津大学成立以来已经成功举办了13届汉语教学年会。

The British Character
If the English are ambiguous, the Welsh loquacious and the Scots cantankerous, how do they all manage to get along on the same overcrowded island?

The English have a gift for ambiguity. As a character in Alan Bennett’s play The Old Country put it: “When we say we don’t mean what we say, only then are we entirely serious” If that seems contradictory, there’s more to come. The British continue to embrace marriage, yet their divorce rate is one of the highest in Europe. They laud family life, yet the traditional practice of the upper classes is to pack their children off to boarding school as soon as possible, and many feel they have no choice but to park their aged parents in old people’s homes.

They are also famed for their tolerance and sense of humor, yet, as the writer Paul Gallico overused: No once can be as calculatedly rude as the British which amazes Americans, who do not understand studied insult and can only offer abuse as a substitute.” Andre Maurois advised his fellow countrymen: “ In France it is rude to let a conversation drop in England it is rash to keep it up. No one there will blame you for silence. When you have not opened your mouth for three years, they will think, “this Frenchman is a nice quiet fellow.”
