Top 10 most effective strategies for student retention at four-year private institutions
  1. Provide practical work experiences (internships, etc)
  2. require on-campus hosing for first year students
  3. academic support (learning center, math lab, tutoring)
  4. Honors programs for academically advanced students
  5. Programs designed specifically for first-year students
  6. Mandatory FYE experiene or orientation course
  7.  Advising by professional staff, one-on-one
  8. Student success coaching (internal)
Role of the PA
  1. Work with all new students helping them transition to NCC
  2. Stay up to date on all curriculum and college requirements
  3. Make sure advisees are aware of departmental/program/campus opportunities
  4. Liaison with campus offices helping to establish programs for student success
  5. Work with advisees struggling to develop an academic success plan
  6. Host workshops and other advising events
  7. Perform assessment of advising initiatives
  8. Participate in professional development opportunities
What does mentoring look like?
  1. Departments/Programs must ensure that opportunities exist for ll majors to engage with faculty outside the classroom
  2. Smaller departments may choose to mentor broader cohort of students, such as undeclared majors or help mentor interdisciplinary program majors
