Always respond in ways that are simple, straightforward, and honest

"I believe more money will be useful, but this conversation is not about...the conversation tonight is about our library's computers, the problems with them, a proposal of how to upgrade them at a bargain price, and the benefit to the town, the library, and the library's users.
" I grant you", "that money is always an issue for most of us. But I really would be surprised if successful organizations-library, businesses, hospitals, whatever are created by budgets that everyone things are adequate....good organizations are much more likely to be created by dedicated people, like the library staff and those individuals who put in time to help create this proposal. They are created by the efficient use of scare resources. And they are undoubtedly created by good ideas-such as the one under review now.
The issue certainly is not about competence or incompetence. The issue here is how we can equip the people on the library staff to do their work at the highest standard possible...
What I hear worries me. you are talking about putting a lot of effort into upgrading technology, yet shouldn't we really be concentrating on improving our collections... "the focus here is on "undermining tranditional values" not on "we've been successful-why risk a change?"...I believe history is filled with examples of organizations and nationas that lost what ehy valued most because they failed to adapt
If we don't give our people the latest tools that can help the institution truly stand for literacy and learning, we'll be selling the future of our city short. over time, poeple in the town would notice the lack of tools and deteriorating staff and stop using our library. And so, what we have traditionally valued would gradually disappear.
This is worrisome because I wonder what other issues may have been overlooksed in the haste with which this plan has been formed.
"first of all, thank you for your kind words about appreciating my effort, but I must emphasize they don't apply just to me- a large team has developed this plan... the fire you mentioned is also helpful to hear abotu- we are still on the lookout for things to double-check as we moved ahead. acutally, that's why we sent out the plan in advance of the meeting, so we ould check out any such concerns beforehand. previously, no one, not even the fire cheif, has expressed any safety concern about the offer from... but now we will certainly look into it as you suggest.
other concerns have been easily addressed. I'll bet the same will be true in this case.
