Compositions & revisions


  • Compositions are your opportunity to express your ideas in Chinese and your instructor's opportunity to check your progress. Please note the dates of the in-class writing assignments carefully in your syllabus and prepare in advance. You will want to treat the in-class composition as more than a draft. Prepare carefully and submit your best work possible. You will write a minimum of 10 sentences in class on the days listed in your itinerary. You may use your text books for vocabulary and guidance in your preparation, but you will write without notes during the in class writing activity. Don't reply on "online translator". NOTE: there writing are similar to the writing portion of your written chapter exam, so preparing well for this activity will not only help you to be a better writer in Chinese, but it will also help you prepare for the writing section on your exams. In class compositions are worth 15 points each.
  • Reviewing and revising your writing is an important step in learning to write well in any language. You will carefully review and revise your composition outside of class, and you will ADD a minimum of additional 10 new sentences to your composition (for a total of 20 sentences minimum). You will handwrite your revisions on the form provided, on the back side of your In-Class composition 。Revisions will be submitted on the day of the chapter exam. Revisions are worth 25 points each.

Culture Portfolio

This term you will be creating and collecting cultural artifacts(assignments) that display your growing knowledge of Hispanic culture. At the end of the term, your portfolios will be on display for class. You will need to organize your cultural portfolio using a 3-ring binder with tab dividers between the sections. For all of the assignments, please run Chinese "spelling& grammar check" prior to submission, and please remember NCC's policy on academic honesty and complete your own work.

rubrics: This portfolio includes assignments that display a studen's growing understanding and appreciation of Hispanic culture. Assignments were revised, as needed, based on feedback from the instructor.

culture portfolio title page: this is the first -impression of your cultural portfolio. You should, at a minimum, include the title of your portfolio, your first& last name, your course& section numbers, the trimester&year, and graphics/photos that summarize your cultural portfolio. Be sure to clearly label each section of your portfolio.

cultural events: during this course, you will broaden your world-view by participating in several cultural events during the afternoon sessions. You will write a short report about each experience describing the event and your opinion/understanding of the event. Be sure to describe the event as completely as you can. Describe the people/participants. Describe the venue/location. Do you know something new now that you have participated in this event?

rubrics: report is extremely logical and effective, and includes a complete description of the event. Superior thought and effort has been put into the crafting of the report. Details are rich and appropriate to the themes we are focusing on in class. Far exceeds the required number of sentences to include highly insightful details.


This course will provide students with a fundamental understanding of the Chinese language in several core competencies. Specifically, the five areas of assessment are: listening, reading, spoken interaction, spoken production, and writing. Below is a table intended to clarify the expected learning outcome for students of this 102 course, which align with the ACTFL standards for language learneers at the "Novie Low/mid" level.


Chinese arts:
art and music are an important part part of chinese cuture. For this assignment you will select a song OR work of art by a Chinese artist and write a short review (in chinese) (typed, double-space, times news roman.arial font, standard margins) of 200-250 words about the artwork or song. In your review, be sure to include:
a photo of the artwork or the complete lyrics (chinese) of this song
a photo of the artist/musician
a brief description (in chinese)  of the artist and the country of origin of this artist
a brief description of the piece ( song or artwork)
a comparison between this artwork or song to sth you already know
your opinion of the work
cite your sources in a bibliography

spelling & mechanics: spelling, punctuation, and capitalization are always correct.

For your midterm project, you will research a famous chinese person and create a video about that person. This assignment is your opportunity to express yourself in chinese and share new information about a famous chinese person (living or deceased) with the class. You may select your famous person based on your own interests: a politician, an athlete, a celebrity, a scientist, etc.
