Getting to know students:
- Talk with students and get to know them individually
- Find out about their academic interests and the reasons they chose to enroll: what are they hoping to gain
- Relationships
Confrontation tips:
- be calm and choose the appropriate time/place
- express concern, give examples
- be prepared for the students to provide excuse, promise behavior change, attempt to redirect the conversation, or pass the problem off as no big deal
- Set specific expectations for how the behavior should change
- Let the student know what the response will be if the behavior is not corrected
Health ad mental health concerns
- Consult: student affairs main office/dean of duty/ dyson wellness center.counselor on duty/international programs (Rebecca: 630-800-5042)
- Don't ignore disruptive behavior
Some tips shared by experienced faculty:
- How do you bring students out of "fear"? Change the subject of the discussion to reduce student's anxiety
- Inclusive Group dynamic: design group activity/assignments/ set clear expectations about this on day one (other example will be like: no toxication -no A grade
- Physical safety, drink bottle water
- Bring your study abroad card
- Phone policies ( don't forget to include this in your expense report)
Case studies:
- Amanda miss home: invitation; peers
- Late policy: "We've got to leave you behind"; alarm, morning call? get them take care of each other; be responsible
- Veggie: take to the store buy fruits and healthy snacks
- Dress: no walking experience at all! high heels?
- Messy room: be representative!
- Dating: school policy (2am to 8am)/ have a conversation with 2 of them before the trip purpose of the trip/sense of community
- no money for the food: call the parents to loan money
- to see the local culture through the guy met on the internet
- go to ER with them
- celebrating
- drinking: remind them of the alcohol content: 2 bottles are not the same
- FAQ session
- pick-up games are ok
- how: cash or credit card pay upfront and keep all the receipts
