Technology and Learning Chinese (yong zhao)

Different technology for different tasks (Like pokeman)

Exposure, how much? Sufficient, lots of, high quality input, authentic

I+1? What is I and what is 1? Multimedia

Foreign language learning failure:

Insufficient input

Speech speed: fast->quick understanding

Allow students to control the speed -> listening comprehension improved

Control matters, individual determines i+1

authenticity

Learning materials not teaching materials

Practice, lots of

Feedback, internal, external, referenced, immediate, delayed, relevant

Meaningful

Authentic

Culture oriented, not linguistic or communication oriented

Understanding the culture as the primary goal of the language learner

Input

Google: search teaching material, check for authenticity, news feed for story, translate to correct writing

Facebook:

Twitter:

Youtube:

Enounce: change speed

Practice

Facebook

Twitter

Skype

2nd life

Youtube

Flashcard

Speech to text: oral practice

Never send a man to do a machine’s job

Technologies do better than human in many aspects

Human should be part of the ecosystem

Repetitive should be done by computers not teachers

Cost issue

Allow computers to do individual learning: speed control, audio cd, companion books, class meeting

Human can do, machine can never do:

Emotional understanding

One intensive hour with teacher

3d game, survive in China

Learn contents, practice, buy food, find hotel, virtual live in Beijing.

Multiplayer game, chat, talk, distant teaching

Language is learned not taught

Teachers

High school students in China to write text books for foreigners
